Two years ago when I was living in San Diego, a couple friends and I took a day trip out to the middle of the nowhere in the desert of Niland, CA near the Salton Sea. We went to see Salvation Mountain and Slab City for ourselves. Salvation Mountain is easily one of the coolest places I’ve ever been to- Leonard Knight (you might have seen him in Into the Wild) literally built it out of adobe clay and straw and then painted it. Whether or not you agree with his simple message that “God is Love”, and that God’s love is universal, you can’t help but be amazed by this little old man who created this unbelievably beautiful work of art in the middle of the desert. He is still expanding it, dedicating all of his time to it and living in the back of his truck at the foot of the mountain.
